Back in August I attended my first Twin Cities foodie event hosted by Eat.Drink.Dish.MPLS! This was a great chance to sample a variety of the brunch choices at Lago Tacos in Uptown and meet many of the other Twin Cities' foodies. It was really nice to be around a bunch of people who aren't afraid to take their plate outside and stand on a table to get the best of their food. Here are my thoughts on each item on the menu.
For $38 we were given six fairly large sample sized courses and a drink. I opted for the margarita, but had I known the Bloody Mary came with a fried pickle, I would have chosen differently. The women next to me said the fried pickles were better than the ones at the state fair! Since I was called out for sprint with excitement towards the Fried Pickle booth over the summer, I can only imagine how great they were.
Our first course of the day was Breakfast Empanadas filled with scrambled eggs, diced bacon, co-jack cheese and house-made salsa on the side. The eggs were perfectly cooked and the cheese oozed with each bite. It was delicious and ended up being one of my favorite courses.
Next, we had the Lago's Egg Benedicts. This dish was sweet corn cakes topped with fresh guacamole, chorizo patties, and poached eggs smothered in a house-made jalapeno hollandaise. It was a spicy take on one of my favorite brunch options. The sweetness of the corn cake helped to offset the spice of the sausage and the hollandaise. Since I am not a huge fan of spicy food, it wasn't my favorite, but it still tasted good.
The next item of the menu was a Tostada Stack made up of three layers of freshly made crispy corn tortillas, chorizo, scrambled eggs, beans, avocado, co-jack cheese, and a spicy house-made arbol and verde sauce. This was an interesting piece that I probably wouldn't have tried if I went to brunch of my own. The corn tortillas made the meal incredibly bready, but filled with different flavors.
Our fourth item on the menu was the Pork Belly & 3 Cheese Omelet. This omelet was stuffed with pork belly, co-jack and menonita cheese, and pico de gallo and topped with an house-made queso sauce. This omelet was the bomb.com. Everything about it was perfect and the queso on topped filled my cheese-loving heart (and stomach). I was so full at this point that I took it home for leftovers. It was a great dinner and I would definitely order this again.
The fifth item on the menu was the Chef's Special, a tamale. This going to be really unhelpful, but I'm not sure how to describe the taste other than being really good! It doesn't matter anyways because it's not on the menu.
Our final course was the French Toast with a hazelnut butter sauce, bananas, and candied pecans. I'm a huge fan of french toast, so I was really excited for this plate and I wasn't disappointed. The toast was perfectly cooked and hazelnut butter sauce was the perfect substitution for syrup. After hours of savory meals, this was a sweet ending to a delicious morning.
I took a lot of pictures using #PortraitModeBabi! Here are some of my favorites :)
